Le patin et ses médias ont beaucoup évolué ces dernières années. De nombreux jeunes vidéastes ont poussé le sport et sa représentation visuelle, et c'est pourquoi nous avons souhaité mettre en avant cette nouvelle génération de réalisateurs talentueux, avec cette nouvelle rubrique des guest edits. Nous commençons aujourd'hui avec un très bel edit réalisé depuis l'Australie par Craig Smith, que je vais laisser se présenter ainsi que son travail. Check him out !
The rolling media have evolved a lot in the past years. There are many skate videographers that have pushed the sport and its representation lately, and that's why we wanted to shed some light on this new generation of talented video makers, with this new guest edits series. First in line is young Craig Smith with a beautiful edit out of Australia, but I'll let him introduce himself and his work. Check him out !
Je m'appelle Craig Smith, et j'habite Melbourne (Australie). J'ai 22 ans. J'ai roulé pendant 7 ans, et filme depuis 5. Au cours de cette période, je suis passé par 4 caméras différentes, 1000 cassettes, et ai passé 3650 heures à attendre de faire le rendu.
Je n'ai aucune idée de comment j'ai découvert le patin à roulettes, car j'ai grandi dans une petite ville à 3 heures au Nord de Melbourne appelée Wangaratta. Je suppose que c'est le patin qui m'a trouvé.
Hi, I’m Craig Smith from Melbourne, Australia. I’m 22 Years of age. I’ve been skating for 7 of those years, and filming for 5. In that time I’ve gone through 4 cameras, 1000 tapes, and spent 3,650 hours waiting for something to render.
I have no idea how I found rollerblading, since I grew up in a country town 3 hours north of Melbourne called Wangaratta. I guess rollerblading found me.
Deux DVD de patin plus tard, et me voici étudiant le Cinéma à la Swinburne University. Je réalise alors un documentaire sur deux jeunes gens mettant aux enchères leur virginité, et il se trouve que les responsables de l'université n'ont pas apprécié le projet, et m'ont présenté deux options : vider les lieux, ou échouer aux examens finaux. Ainsi j'ai quitté l'école, et continué à travailler sur ce projet.
The first real skate video I saw was an Australian USD team video, “USD 2002” by Matt Raimondo. I was heavily influenced by it. My friends would be saying ‘wow’ at the tricks, while I was looking at the crazy effects wondering how he did them. At this stage I had a family camcorder and was editing using 2 VCR’s and a big old stereo, you would lose the sound of the skating, but add music. I labelled these VHS edits under the name “Phred Rolling Media”.
2 rollerblading DVD’s later and I’m studying Film at Swinburne University. I am shooting a documentary about two people selling their virginity, and the university didn’t like it, so they gave me two options for this year: defer, or fail. So I deferred and continued with the project.

Deferring has been good, it’s given me the opportunity to skate, travel and film. I have made a few Razors Podcasts, a Remz Podcast, the WRS Aus Roll Open edit, and filmed for “About Rollerblading”.
The DVD is currently being distributed throughout Europe by Be-Mag, and can be found in your favourite skateshop of course, so make sure you snap up a copy ! Check out the final instalment of trailers leading up to the release above, I think it encapsulates the impression you get when you watch the whole thing start to finish.

Mes amis réagissaient aux tricks, quand je m'intéressais aux effets vidéos et me demandais comment ils avaient bien pu être réalisés. J'ai commencé à utiliser le caméscope familial, et à monter avec deux magnétoscopes et une vieille stéréo. On perdait le son du skating, mais on pouvait y substituer de la musique. Cela m'a apporté beaucoup de bonnes choses en définitive, tout comme l'opportunité de rouler, voyager et filmer.
